PILATES

"pilates is complete co-ordination of body, mind & spirit" - joseph pilates

When Joseph Pilates developed his Contrology method to alleviate ill health & body recovery in the early 20th century, he probably didn't expect over 100 years later, more than 12 million people would be practising worldwide (*as of 2023).

His method has been studied, varied, improved & adapted to continue with our further understanding of the human body & anatomy.

Pilates exercises can be practiced on an exercise mat with or without props, but has also evolved to specialised equipment such as the reformer or cadillac which mimics the movements done on the mat but allows the user to add resistance & explore range.

The idea behind these repetitive movements is to assist with good posture, alignment & health of spine, muscle function & improve core/back strength. We focus on the part of our body known as the "Powerhouse" (abdomen, low back & hips), which keeps our body strong, stable & upright.

This can help to relieve pain & stiffness caused by poor posture, incorrect function of muscles or sedentary jobs.

Yoga & Pilates do share similarities & can often be fused together in an all-rounder class. However yoga is mainly based on relaxation & flexibility, where as Pilates is based on strength & engagement of the "Powerhouse" of our body.

Both disciplines however are considered a mind, body & spirit practice which compliment each other very well!
