are you happy?

a friend recently asked if i'm happy

i replied 'yes i am happy!

but i'm also sad too.'

because i can not truly admit my happiness, without understanding my sadness,

both equal in measure, giving depth to the other.

so when either arrives,

i ask, 'how long are you going to remain with me this time?'

each reply:

'oh just a while,

until the other has something to teach you'

knowing they won't be around for long,

i make peace with them both;

& a home for each in my heart.
